Well, let me tell you, I’ve had a whirlwind of adventures in Key West. Two memorable trips with my buddies filled with laughter and crazy fun. And then, two unforgettable vacations with my beloved family – my wife and our two energetic boys.
Key West has something for everyone, but there’s a hidden gem that doesn’t make it into the spotlight as often as it should. I’m talking about the Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park Beach, a Florida State park that’s etched its beauty into every one of my Key West memories.
Whether I was a bachelor or a family man, this park was always on my itinerary. Tucked away from the city’s bustle, yet just a 10-minute drive from Mallory Square, it’s also a delightful 15 to 20-minute bike ride away, a journey I’ve taken both on wheels and behind the wheel.
The beach, with its long stretch of pristine white sand and clear, warm ocean waters, is a dream. Visitors can bring their own barbecues and picnics, complete with towels and chairs. But if you prefer, the beach also offers relaxing chairs, umbrellas, and barbecue facilities for a nominal fee. There are food outlets serving mouthwatering beachside grub and a couple of cozy, well-run bars to quench your thirst.
When I took my boys, we packed their wave boards. There’s a spot near the west end breakwater that serves up just enough waves for them to ride and enjoy for hours. But remember, this is Key West, especially in the summer, so don’t forget your hat, protective gear, a sun-protective swimming shirt, and plenty of sunscreen. The Florida sun can be relentless!
The park is impressively managed, boasting large, clean, and safe public restrooms and an ample parking area conveniently located near the beach and the fort. It’s open from 8:00 AM until sunset, 365 days a year, with the fort closing its doors at 5:00 PM. For a car carrying up to eight people, the entrance fee is $6, $4.50 for a motorcycle, and a mere $2.50 for pedestrians and cyclists. It’s a small price to pay for the experience.
